The rats are always there in the cellar

 

We begin to notice, besides our particular sinful acts, our sinfulness; 

begin to be alarmed /not only about what we do, but about what we are. 

This may sound rather difficult, 

so I will try to make it clear /from my own case. 

 

* 전목인 의문사절 what we do, what we are. 

* 불자 sound의 보어인 형용사구 ; rather difficult, 

* 사역동사 5 형식, make it clear /from my own case. 목적이 목보되게 동사하다

 

When I come /to my evening prayers and try to reckon up the sins of the day,

nine times out of ten the most obvious one is some sin against charity;

 

* RECKON UP is to calculate the total number or amount of (something).

 

I have sulked or snapped or sneered or snubbed or stormed.

And [the excuse //that immediately springs /to my mind] is that the provocation was so sudden and unexpected;

I was caught off my guard,

I had not time to collect myself.

 

* 주어인 명사구, the excuse //that immediately springs /to my mind  명+형절/주격 관대절 (관계사=선행사=주어),

* to catch someone off guard: to surprise someone, to find someone unprepared 허를 찔리다

 

Now that may be an extenuating circumstance as regards those particular acts:

they would obviously be worse /if they had been deliberate and premeditated.

 

* 주어로 쓰인 지시대명사 that

* as regards ; concerning; with respect to.

* 가정법 ; 주절 would+원형동사, 조건절 had+pp

 

On the other hand,

surely [what a man does /when he is taken /off his guard] is the best evidence /for what sort of a man he is?

Surely [what pops out /before the man has time to put on a disguise] is the truth?

 

* on the other hand ; to introduce the second of two contrasting points, facts, or ways of looking at something.

* 주어인 의문사절, [what pops out /before the man has time to put on a disguise] 

* 접속사로 쓰인 before

* 형역 부정사구,  to put on a disguise ; 선행사인 time 수식

 

If there are rats in a cellar you are most likely to see them /if you go in very suddenly.

But the suddenness does not create the rats:

it only prevents them from hiding.

 

In the same way [the suddenness of the provocation] does not make [me] [an ill-tempered man];

it only shows [me] [what an ill-tempered man I am].

The rats are always there in the cellar,

but if you go in /shouting and noisily they will have taken cover /before you switch on the light.

* 형역 과분사 ill-tempered 과분사의 수동 주체인 man 수식

* 4 형식 shows [me] [what an ill-tempered man I am]. 간목에게 직목을 동사하다

* 주어 수식인 형역 현분사 shouting (자동사 뒤에 주어의 상태를 설명하는 형용사도 쓰임 come home safe.)

 

직독해석

 

We 우리는 begin 시작한다 to notice 알아채기를, besides our 우리의 particular 특정한 sinful 죄 많은 acts 행동 말고도,

our sinfulness 우리의 죄성인;

begin 시작한다 to be alarmed 경악하기를 not only 단지 about what we do 우리가 하는 그것에 대한 것뿐만 아니고,

but about what we are 우리가 무엇/어떤 자라는 것에 대하여도.

 

This 이것은 may sound 들릴 수 있다 rather 좀 difficult 어렵게,

so 그래서 I 나는 will try 시도할 것이다 to make 만들기를 it 그것이 clear 명확하게 되게

from my own case 내 자신의 경우에서.

 

When 그때 I 내가 come 올/갈 때 to my evening 오후 prayers 기도시간에

and 그리고 try 시도할 때 to reckon up 정산하기를 the sins 죄들을 of the day 그날의,

nine times out of ten 십중팔구 the most 가장 obvious 명백한 one 죄는 is 이다 some sin 몇몇 죄들

against charity 사랑에 반대하는;

I 나는 have sulked 토라지거나 or snapped 딱딱거리거나 or sneered 조소하거나 or snubbed 무시하거나 or stormed 몰아쳤다.

And the excuse 그 변명은 that 그건 immediately 즉각적으로 springs 튀어 오른 to my mind 내 마음에

is 이다

that절 내용 즉 the provocation 충동질이 was so 너무 sudden 급작스럽고 and unexpected 예상 밖이라는 것;

I 나는 had not time 시간이 없었다 to collect 모을/추스릴 myself 내 자신을.

Now 이제 that 그것이 may be an extenuating 정상 참작이 가능한 circumstance 상황일 수 있다

as regards 관련하여 those 그런 particular 특정한 acts 행동들에:

 

they 그것들은 would obviously 명백히 be worse 더 나빠질 수 있다

if 만약 they 그것들이 had been deliberate 고의적이었고 and premeditated 계획되었다면.

 

On the other hand 반대로, surely 확실히 [what 그것은 a man does 한 사람이 하는

when 그때 he 그가 is taken off his guard 허를 찔렸을 때]

is 이다 the best 최고의 evidence 증거 for what 그것에 대한 sort of a man 어떤 종류의 사람이 he is 그사람인지라는?

 

Surely 확실히 [what 그것은 pops out 터져 나오는 before 그전에 the man 그 사람이 has time 시간을 가질

to put on 입을 a disguise 변장을]

is the truth 진실/사실인가?

 

If 만약 there are 있다면 rats 쥐들이 in a cellar 지하실에

you 당신은 are most likely 십중팔구 to see 볼 것이다 them 그것들을

if 만약 you 당신이 go in 들어가면 very suddenly 아주 갑작스레.

 

But 그러나 the suddenness 갑작스러움은 does not create 창조하지 않는다 the rats 쥐들을:

it 그건 only 단지 prevents 막는다 them 그것들을 from hiding 숨는 걸로부터.

 

In the same way 같은 방식으로

the suddenness 갑작스러움은 of the provocation 충돌질의 does not make 만들지 않는다

me 나를 an ill-tempered man 화를 잘 내는 사람으로;

 

it 그건 only 단지 shows 보여준다 me 내가 what 얼마나 an ill-tempered man I am 화를 잘 내는 사람인지를.

 

The rats 쥐들은 are 있다 always 항상 there 거기 in the cellar 지하실에,

but 그러나 if 만약 you 당신이 go in 들어가면 shouting 소리 지르고 and noisily 시끄럽게

they 그들은 will have taken cover 숨을 것이다 before 그전에 you 당신이 switch on 켤 때 the light 불을.

 

* 인간의 죄성 본성은 충동질되어서 생겨 나오는 것이 아니라 인간 자체 내에 존재하기에 충동질되는 것이다
