Acts 27:17 사도행전 27장 17절 : 연장-닻의 올바른 이해

 

Then the sailors bound ropes around the hull of the ship /to strengthen it.

They were afraid of being driven /across to the sandbars of Syrtis /off the African coast,

so they lowered the sea anchor /to slow the ship and were driven /before the wind.

17 Then 그러고 나서 the sailors 선원들은 bound 묶었다 ropes 밧줄을 around the hull 선체 둘레에 of the ship 배의

* 배 뒤에 물살의 저항물체인 해묘가 떠서 끌려가기에 배가 빨리 밀려가는 것을 막아 멀리 표류하지 못하게 하는 연장/기구임

 

태풍으로 인해 배를 조정하기 어려운데 해안 가까이로 밀려가서 모래톱에 걸리면 배가 침몰하거나 깨질 수 있기에

배가 빨리 밀려가지 않도록 배 뒤에 떠서 끌려가는 부표 비슷한 물체인 sea anchor 해묘를 던졌다 하는데

개역은 연장이라하여 여차하면 배 안에서 쓰는 연장을 버렸다로 오해할 수가 있고 (본인이 한 오해임)

 

새 번역에서는 anchor  '닻'을 내렸다 하여 마치 무거운 닻을 내린 것으로 착각되는데

닻이 바닷물 바닥에 닿지 않으면 무거운 닻이 배를 기울일 것이므로 배를 침몰시킬 위험이 있고

바닥에 닿으면 배가 움직이지 못하기에 배에 부딪히는 막강한 파도의 충격을 다 받아서 배가 깨질 위험이 있으므로

harbor 항만이나 bay 만(灣)이 아니면 무거운 닻은 내릴 일이 없는 법이니 좋은 번역은 아니라 생각되고

번역자가 다양한 영어 번역을 참고 했더라면 sea anckor라는 단어를 보고 네이버 사전을 찾으면 '해묘'라는 설명이 나와서

독자의 이해를 돕는 좋은 번역이 나올 수 있었지만 못했기에 아쉽다

그리고 그들은 리비아 근해의 모래톱으로 밀려들까 두려워서, 바다에 닻을 내리고, 그냥 떠밀려 가고 있었다. 

 

(NIV) so the men hoisted it aboard. Then they passed ropes under the ship itself to hold it together. 

Because they were afraid they would run aground on the sandbars of Syrtis, 

they lowered the sea anchor and let the ship be driven along.

 

(CSB) After hoisting it up, they used ropes and tackle and girded the ship. 

Then, fearing they would run aground on the Syrtis, 

they lowered the drift-anchor, and in this way they were driven along.

 

(NAS) After they had hoisted it up, they used supporting cables in undergirding the ship; 

and fearing that they might run aground on the shallows of Syrtis,

 they let down the sea anchor and in this way let themselves be driven along.
