temptation 유혹

 

If I am never tempted, 

and cannot even imagine myself being tempted, to gamble, 

this does not mean that I am better than those who are.

and adventures //which every man ought to take.

직독해석

 

If 만약 I 내가 am never 결코 tempted 유혹된 적이 없다면,

and 그리고 cannot even imagine 상상조차 할 수 없다면 myself 내 자신이 being tempted 유혹되는 상태로, to gamble 도박에,

this 이것은 does not mean 의미하지 않는다 that절 내용을 즉 I 내가 am better 더 낫다는 것 than those 그들보다

who are 유혹된.

The timidity 소심함과 and pessimism 비관주의는 which 그건 exempt 예외 시키는 me 나를

from that temptation themselves 유혹 자체로부터

돈 잃을까봐 무서워서 하거나 따지 못 할 것이라는 비관적인 성격이라면 도박에 유혹을 당할 염려는 없지만

위험과 모험에 도전하지 말자는 유혹에는 쉽사리 당하기에 유혹에 강한 면은 동시에 유혹에 약한 면도 있다
