as a contract or promise /at all.

If love is the whole thing, then the promise can add nothing; 

and if it adds nothing, then it should not be made. 

 

The curious thing is that lovers themselves, while they remain really in love,

 know this /better than those //who talk about love. 

 

As Chesterton pointed out, [those //who are in love] have a natural inclination to bind themselves by promises. 

 

[Love songs all over the world] are full of vows of eternal constancy. 

 

 

The Christian law is not forcing /upon the passion of love [something //which is foreign /to that passion’s own nature]:

it is demanding that lovers should take seriously something //which their passion of itself impels them to do.

The Christian law 기독교의 법은 is not forcing 강제하지 않는다 /upon the passion of love 사랑의 정열 위에

A promise 한 약속은 must be about things 일들에 관한 것이어야 한다 that 그건 I can do 할 수 있는 것,

about actions 행동에 관한 것이다: 

no one 아무도 can promise 약속할 수 없다 to go on 계속하기를 feeling 감정을 느끼기를 in a certain way 특정한 방식으로.

 

* 아무도 처음에 열렬히 사랑했던 그 감정을 계속 느끼기를 약속할 수 없는 건

감정이란 식거나 변할 수 있기 때문에 본인이 할 수 있는 일, 즉 행동에 관련된 약속을 해야 한다

 He 그는 might as well promise never 약속하는 것이 더 낫다 to have a headache 결코 두통을 안 나거나

or always 항상 to feel hungry 배고품을 안 느끼기를.

사랑의 열렬한 감정도 항상 느끼겠다고 약속할 수 없는 노릇이니 사랑은 감정뿐인 것이 아니라는 의미다
