New Living Translation
When I first came /to you, dear brothers and sisters,
 I didn’t use lofty words and impressive wisdom /to tell you God’s secret plan.
 For I decided that while I was with you I would forget everything except Jesus Christ, 
the one //who was crucified. 

 

* lofty ; having a feeling of superiority that shows itself in an overbearing attitude

* impressive ; Making a strong positive impression; inspiring admiration or awe. 인상적인, 잘나 보이는

  having the ability to impress the mind; arousing admiration, awe, respect, etc.; moving; admirable:

* 부역부정사구 /to tell you God’s secret plan.

* 동격 명사구 the one //who was crucified = Jesus Christ

And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. 
When I came to you, I did not come /with eloquence or human wisdom 
as I proclaimed /to you [the testimony about God]. 
 For I resolved [to know nothing] /while I was with you /except Jesus Christ and him /crucified.

Contemporary English Version
Friends, when I came and told you [the mystery //that God had shared /with us], 
I didn’t use big words or try [to sound wise]. 
In fact, while I was with you, I made up my mind /to speak only about Jesus Christ, 
who had been nailed to a cross.

 

* big words 어려운 말, 단어
Words that aren't in someone's limited vocabulary, so they accuse you of trying to "sound intelligent" 

when what they really mean is, clearly you are more intelligent than I am, and I should pick up a dictionary.

* MAKE UP YOUR MIND (phrase): make a decision

The Message
You’ll remember, friends, that when I first came /to you /to let you in on God’s sheer genius,
 I didn’t try [to impress you with polished speeches and the latest philosophy]. 
I deliberately kept it plain and simple: 
first Jesus and who he is; then Jesus and what he did—Jesus /crucified.

 

* 부역부정사구 /to let you in on God’s sheer genius,

* LET IN ON (phrasal verb): tell someone a secret.

* 목적인 명역 부정사구 to impress you with polished speeches and the latest philosophy. 

* deliverately ; Consciously and intentionally; on purpose.

* 전치수식 형역과분사 polished, 후치수식 형역 과분사 crucified

 

NLT와 MSG 만 impressive 를 쓰고 NIV는 eloquence, CEV는 big words 를 썻는데

재담이든 어려운 말/단어를 섞어작 하여 말 하는 이유는 사람이나 상황에 따라 다르다 하겠지만

기본적으로 자신의 유식함을 통통 튀겨서 좋은 인상을 주고 받자고 하는 좋은 의도요

말 잘해서 존경과 찬사를 받는다는 것은 SPEAKER 연사면 누구나 열망하는 말의 열매라 하겠고

청중이 하나든 여럿이든 말하는 사람은 여전히 연사고 여전히 말 잘하여 좋은 인상을 주기를 바란다

 

물론 어떤 연사는 좋은 인상을 주고자 어려운 말이나 단어를 섞어작하여 능수능란하게 말하니

유식면에서 좀 뒤떨어진 열등청중의 존경과 탄성을 유발하게 만들어 피차 감동감격을 주고받고 사고팔고

어떤 청중은 쉬운말도 많은데 구태여 사전을 찾아야 하는 어려운 말로 해야는가 하며 반감을 살 수도 있고

자기자랑하려 사자성어도 영어도 섞어작 해서  어려운 말 쓴다고 오해를 팔고 살 여지도 많은게 사실이나

어쨋든 어떤 연사든 말로 호감을 사자는 기본철학에는 변함이 없다 하겠다

 

호감을 산다는 것, 좋은 인상을 준다는 것, 잘 보인다는 것, 인정 받기를 원하는 것은 인간의 기본가치며

이 가치가 제값 이상으로 사고 팔려야 인생가치가 올라 행복지수도 덩달아 오르는바

누구나 이 귀한 가치를 사모하여 어찌하든 소유하려고 온갗 노력을 경주하는데

impressive 인상적이기 위해서는 말도 말이지만 외모도 중요하므로 명품 옷으로 부실한 몸도 감싸고

기적의 화장품도 덕지덕지 발라서 이미지 새창조에도 열심내고 면접 영어도 달달달 외워 면접인상값도 올리고

없는 말 있는 말 총동원하여 청중의 귀를 즐겁게 하여 호감보석을 사서 내 존재가치를 높이자 기를 쓴다

 

이런 와중에 바울이 나서서 자기는 작정하고 호감 사서 잘 보이려고 노력하지 않는다 말하며

호감은 커녕 반감만 유발할 처절살벌 피 비린내 나는 십자가에 달려 돌아가신 그리스도만 전하겠다니

이 무신 청천벽력 같은 정신나간 헛소린가 하겠지만

멸망으로 가는 자들에게 십자가는 정신나간 헛소리이겠으나

구원을받는 우리 신자들에게는 하나님의 능력이라 하였으니 (고전1:18)

 

하나님 현실에서는 호감사자하여 철학적 고상한 말로 청중을 사로잡는 그들이 정신나간 사람들이요

그런말로 청중 마음을 감격감동으로 사로잡아 봐야 하나님의 능력은 절대로 나오지 않을거니

일순간 즐거운 귀로 한 순간 감동과 감격은 받겠지만 강철같은 마음근육을 move 동하기엔 태부족이라

수십년 고상한 말로 가르쳐 봐야 한 사람도 중생시킬 수 없는 것은

중생의 원동력인 성신 하나님은 오직 십자가를 통해서만이 오실 수 있기 때문이다

 

누구의 호감을 사서 어찌 해 보겠다고 사람의 호감사려 별짓 다하며 몸부림 쳐야 하나?

일순간 귀나 눈이나 마음은 즐겁겠지만 그것들은 사막의 신기루 같아 현실 부재로 잡아도 헛일이니

전 인생을 잡으려 날뛰어도 못잡을 헛된 망상이 바로 인간의 인간에 의한/위한 호감사기 詐欺사기다

 

그걸 모르니 바울이 나서서 호감사려 노력하지 말고 십자가만 전하라 충고하는데

이 충고는 바울의 충고만이 아니고 그리스도의 충고인 것은

바울은 그리스도의 마음을 가졌기 때문이다 (고전2:16)

 

Lord, help us not to try to impress people by what little beauty we have, but tell them Your beautiful truth. Amen.
