1 In Caesarea there lived a Roman army officer /named Cornelius,

who was a captain of the Italian Regiment.

who 그는 was a captain 대장이었다 of the Italian Regiment 로마군 수비대의.

2 He was a devout, God-fearing man, as was everyone in his household. 

He gave generously to the poor and prayed regularly to God.

3 One afternoon about three o’clock, 

he had a vision //in which he saw [an angel of God] [coming toward him].

“Cornelius!” the angel said.

 

3 One afternoon 어느 날 오후 about three o’clock 3시쯤에,

 “Cornelius 고넬료야!” the angel 천사가 said 말했다.

3 About three o’clock 3시 쯤에 one afternoon 어느 날 오후,

4 Cornelius stared at him in terror. “What is it, sir?” he asked the angel. 

And the angel replied, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have been received /by God /as an offering!

“What is it 무엇인지요, sir 선생님?” he 그는 asked 물었다 the angel 천사에게. 

And the angel 천사는 replied 대답했다,

“Your prayers 당신의 기도와 and gifts 선물들이 to the poor 극빈자들에 대한 have been received 받아졌다

by God 하나님에 의해서 as an offering 헌물로!

 

* What is it ; Used to ask the listener what they want.

* 고넬료는 하나님께서 받으시는 기도와 헌물을 드렸지만 그렇지 못한 기도와 헌물을 드리고도 몰라서

   바치고도 상급을 못 받는 애석한 분들도 많다 봄

5 Now send some men /to Joppa, and summon [a man named Simon Peter].

5 Now 이제 send 보내라 some men 몇몇 사람을 to Joppa 욥바로,

and summon 호출하라 a man 한 사람을 named 불리는 Simon Peter 시몬 베드로라고.

* 가이사랴에서 욥바까지의 거리는 약 50여km 정도로 건장한 사람이 걸어서 약 12시간이 걸리는 거리
  욥바는 예루살렘 서쪽 105 km 지점의 해안도시이고 가이사랴는 욥바 북쪽의 항구도시며 바울이 2년 옥살이 한 곳임

 

6 He is staying /with Simon, a tanner //who lives /near the seashore.”

  오늘날 먼 동방 이방인인 우리 한인들도 복음을 받아 구원의 축복을 누리게 되는 대 서사시의 첫 장을 여셨는데

 한적하고 외진 위치상 로마군이 왔다 가도 사람들이 눈치채지 못해 조용히 수천년 묶은 인종의 벽을 허무셨다

  (가죽 공장이니 갑옷이 필요한 군인들이 왔음직도 하다 봄)

 아마도 공개적으로 했다면 전 유대인들이 들고 일어나 반란이라도 났음직한 천지개벽의 엄청난 변화이다

4 Cornelius 고넬료 (terrified 무서워서):  What is it 무엇인가요/무슨 일인가요, sir 선생님?
Messenger of God 천사: God 하나님께서 has heard 들으셨다 your prayers 당신의 기도를,

and He 하나님께서 has seen 보셔서 아신다 your kindness 너의 친절함을 to the poor 극빈자에게 대한. 

God 하나님께서 has taken notice of 인지하셨다 you 당신을. 

 

* sir ;  used as a polite or respectful way of addressing a man, especially one in a position of authority. 높은 남성 존칭어

  남성인 선생님, 장교/장군님, 어르신, 사장님, 고객님 등을 대신하여 쓸 수 있으나 친한데 쓰면 싫어함

5-6 Send 보내라 men 사람들을 south 남쪽 to Joppa 욥바로, 

to the house 집으로 of a tanner 피장의 named 불리는 Simon 시몬이라고. 

Ask 요청하라 to speak 말하기를 to a guest 손님에게 of his 그의 named Simon 시몬이라고 작명된,

but 그러나 also 또한 called Peter 베드로라고 불리는.

7 As soon as the angel was gone, 

Cornelius called [two of his household servants and a devout soldier],

one of his personal attendants.

10 and he was hungry. But while a meal was being prepared, he fell /into a trance.

12 In the sheet were all sorts of animals, reptiles, and birds.

* According to the Mosaic law, Jews are not allowed to eat camel, rabbit, pig, carrion birds, and winged insects

(Deuteronomy 14:7–19). God declared these animals "unclean" for His people. 

모세의 율법에 의거하면 이런 생명체들을 먹는 것이 허락 안 됨

13 Then a voice said /to him, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat them.”

13 Then 그러고 나서 a voice 한 목소리가 said 말했다 to him 그에게,

“Get up 일어나라, Peter 베드로야; kill 죽여서 and eat 먹어라 them 그것들을.”

14 “No, Lord,” Peter declared. 

“I have never eaten [anything //that our Jewish laws have declared [impure and unclean]. ”

14 “No 아닙니다, Lord 주님,” Peter 베드로는 declared 선언했다.

 “I 저는 have never 결코 eaten 먹지 않았었습니다 anything 어떤 것이라도 that 그건 our Jewish laws 우리의 유대 율법이 

have declared 선포한 것 impure 부정하고 and unclean 불결하다고. ”

I’ve 저는 never 결코 eaten 먹지 않았었습니다 nonkosher foods 적법하지 않은 음식을

like these 이런 것 같은 before 이전에—not once 단 한 번도 in my life 내 생애에서!

 

* 베드로가 이런 같은 답변을 한 적이 있었다 (마 16:22)

  사실 말이 안 되는 건 기록된 율법에 어긋나기 때문이고 독실한 율법 준수자라면 서슴없이 '아닙니다' 해야 되나

  먹으라고 하신 분이 바로 그 율법을 만드신 분이라면? 먹으라 한 타당한 이유가 있었을 것이 아닐까?

15 But the voice spoke again: “Do not call [something] [unclean] /if God has made it clean.”

15 But 그러나 the voice 그 목소리는 spoke 말했다 again 다시금:

“Do not call 부르지 마라 something 어떤 것을 unclean 불결하다고

if 만약 God 하나님께서 has made 만드셨다면 it 그것을 clean 깨끗하게.”

* 하나님께서는 깨끗하다 하시는데 사람이 아닙니다 하면 누가 틀릴까?

  '그리 부르지 마라'하신 명령 자체도 법이 아니던가?

  사랑법에 따라 살라고 하셨는데 율법을 고수한다면 손해 볼 사람은 율법을 단 한 번이라도 범한자인 건

  율법을 깬 죄인을 처벌할 것을 요구해야는 것이 정의정당 당연당당한 율법의 요구인지라 주께서 십자가를 지셨는데

  다시금 율법주의자로 돌아가서 온당부당 타령을 한다면 개가 토한 것으로 돌아간 더러운 징조나

  사랑법으로 산다면 음식 율법이 있으나 없으나 내 사랑 내 몸에 안 좋은 걸 구태여 먹자할 상식도 이유도 없다

15 A Voice 한 목소리:  If 만약 God 하나님께서 calls 부르신다면 something 어떤 것을 permissible 허락 가능하고

and clean 깨끗하다고, you 너는 must not call 부르면 안 된다 it 그걸 forbidden 금지되어지고 and dirty 더럽다고!

16 The same vision was repeated /three times.

Then the sheet was suddenly pulled up /to heaven.

16 The same vision 같은 환상이 was repeated 반복되어졌다 /three times 3회.

Then 그러고 나서 the sheet 그 보따리는 was suddenly 갑자기 pulled up 끌어올려졌다 to heaven 하늘로.

17 Peter was very perplexed. 

What could the vision mean? 

Just then [the men /sent by Cornelius] found Simon’s house]. 

Standing outside the gate,

18 they asked if [a man /named Simon Peter] was staying there.

 

17 Peter 베드로는 was very 매우 perplexed 당혹스러웠다. 

What 무엇을 could the vision 이 환상이 mean 의미하는 것일까? 

Just then 바로 그때 [the men 그 사람들 sent 보내진 by Cornelius 고넬료에 의해] found 발견했다 Simon’s house 시몬의 집을. 

Standing 서서 outside the gate 문 밖에서,

18 they 그들은 asked 물었다 if [a man 한 사람이 named 불리는 Simon Peter 시몬 베드로라고]

was staying 머물고 있는지를 there 거기에서.

as 이때 he 그가 tried 시도할 때 to make sense 쉽게 이해하기를 of this strange vision 이런 이상한 환상을.
At that very moment 바로 그 순간에,

Peter 베드로는 heard 들었다 [the voices 그 목소리를 of Cornelius’s 고넬료의 delegation 대표단의], 

who 그들 had asked for 요청한 directions 길안내를 to Simon’s house 시몬의 집을 향하는,

coming 들려오는 from the front gate 정문으로부터.

18 Delegation 대표단:  Is 있습니까 there a man 한 사람이 named 불리는 Simon 시몬이라고,

also 또한 called 불리는 Peter 베드로라고, staying 머무는 중인 at this house 이 집에서?

 

* 목적인 부정사구 to make sense of this strange vision

* to make sense : to have a clear meaning : to be easy to understand.

* Delegation; a body of delegates or representatives;

바울의 천지개벽은 완전 깨진 결과로 되어 '어찌할까요'라는 항복이 나왔기에 다음 단계를 지시할 수 있었지만

베드로의 천지개벽은 율법에 대해 너무나도 확고한 때문에 깰 틈이 없으므로 혼란의 방법으로 깰 틈을 내었다 봄

19 Meanwhile, as Peter was puzzling /over the vision, the Holy Spirit said /to him,

“Three men have come /looking for you.

19 Meanwhile 그럴 즈음, as Peter 베드로가 was puzzling 곤혹스러워할 때 over the vision 환상에 대해,

the Holy Spirit 성령님께서 said 말씀하셨다 to him 그에게, 

“Three men 세 사람이 have come 와 있다 looking for 찾으며 you 너를.

 

* 형역 분사구 /looking for you. 현분사의 능동 주체인 Three men 수식

* 베드로가 환상으로 인해 곤혹스러워할 때 율법에 대한 자신의 확신도 같이 흔들렸다 보면

  그로 인해 자기 확신이란 철옹성에 금이가고 구멍이 나서 그 사이로 진리이신 하나님의 말씀이 들어가면

  답도 없는 자기 확신/믿음의 기만이 무력화되어 하나님의 뜻을 온전히 찾아 이루게 될 계기가 된다 봄 

20 Get up, go /downstairs, and go /with them /without hesitation.

Don’t worry, for I have sent them.” 

20 Get up 일어나, go 가라 downstairs 아래층으로,

and go 가라 /with them 그들과 함께 without hesitation 망설임 없이.

Don’t worry 걱정마라, for 왜냐면 I 내가 have sent 보냈기에 them 그들을.”

19-20 Peter’s mind 베드로의 마음은 was still 여전히 racing 줄달음쳤다 about the vision 환상에 대해서

when 그때 the voice 그 음성이 of the Holy Spirit 성령님의 broke through 돌파하셨다 his churning thoughts 그의 맴도는 생각을.
Holy Spirit 성령님: [The three men 세 사람이 who are searching for 찾고 있는 you 너를] have been sent 보내졌다

by Me 나에 의해. So 그러므로 get up 일어나! Go 가라 with them 그들과 함께.

Don’t hesitate 망설이거나 or argue 변론하지 마라.

 

* 형역 분사 churning   현분사의 능동 주체인 thoughts 수식

* break through ; make or force a way through a barrier.

마음에 혼란이 없었고 강철 신념으로 여전히 무장되었더라면

예수님을 고문하고 십자가에 처형한 악질적이고 무법으로 불결한 이방인 로마 군인을 영접할 리 없고

따라갈 리도 없었을 것이라 생각되고 이방 전도의 문도 막혔을 것이라 봄

21 So Peter went down and said, “I’m the man () you are looking for.

Why have you come?”

21 So 그래서 Peter 베드로는 went down 내려가서 and said 말했다,

“I’m 내가 the man 그 사람이요 (whom/who) you 당신들이 are looking for 찾는. 

Why 왜 have you 당신들은 come 왔소?”

21 Peter 베드로는 rushed 급히 내려갔다 downstairs 아래층으로 to the men 그 사람들에게.

Can you 당신들은 tell 말할 수 있느냐 me 나에게 [why 왜 you’ve 당신들이 come 왔는지를]?

22 They said, “We were sent by Cornelius, a Roman officer. 

He is a devout and God-fearing man, well respected by all the Jews. 

A holy angel instructed him [to summon you to his house]

/so that he can hear your message.”

 

22 They 그들이 said 말했다, “We 우리는 were sent 보냄을 받았습니다 by Cornelius 고넬료에 의해,

a Roman officer 로마인 장교인. 

He 그는 is a devout 독실하고 and God-fearing 하나님을 경외하는 man 사람입니다,

well 매우 respected 존경받는 by all the Jews 모든 유대인에 의해. 

A holy angel 거룩한 천사가 instructed 지시했습니다 him 그가 to summon 호출하기를 you 당신을 to his house 그의 집으로

/so that 그래서 he 그가 can hear 들을 수 있도록 your message 당신의 전언을.”

  베드로 자신조차도 '그건 안 됩니다'하고 단호하게 거절한 게 어제 일이기에 오늘도 여전히 그 문제에 사로잡혀 있다 보며

  이런 복음 전파를 막는 편견과 차별 문제는 없는 종족/민족이 없다 보면 우리도 심각하게 고민해야 할 일이다 하겠음

—that there is peace with God /through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.

only 단지 those of us 우리들만 whom 그들 God 하나님께서 chose 선택하신 as witnesses 증인으로서. 

We 우린 actually 실제적으로 ate 먹고 and drank 마셨다 with Him 그분과 함께 after His resurrection 그분의 부활 후에. 

42 And he ordered us to preach everywhere and to testify that Jesus is the one /appointed by God

to be the judge of all—the living and the dead.

 

42 And he 그분께서는 ordered 명령하셨다 us 우리에게 to preach 전파하기를 everywhere 모든 곳에서

and to testify 증언하기를 that절 내용을 즉 Jesus 예수님께서 is the one 그분이시다는 것 appointed 임명되신

by God 하나님에 의해서 to be the judge 심판자가 되라고 of all 모든 이들의

—the living 산 자들이나 and the dead 죽은 자들 다.

44 Even as Peter was saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell /upon all //who were listening /to the message.

but 그러나 the Holy Spirit 성령님께서 suddenly 갑자기 interrupted 중단시키시고 and came 오셨다

upon all the people 모든 사람 위에 who were listening 듣고 있었던. 

 

* 어쩌면 베드로는 이방인들을 회개시키고 물세례 주기까지만 계획했을지도 모르는 것은

   어제까지도 불결하다 생각했던 이방인들이 성령 세례를 받을 것이라곤 상상조차 하지 못했을 때문이다

45 [The Jewish believers //who came with Peter] were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out

/on the Gentiles, too.

 

45 The Jewish 유대인 believers 신자들은 who came 왔었던 with Peter 베드로와 were amazed 놀랐다

that 그건 the gift 선물이 of the Holy Spirit 성령님의 had been poured out 부어졌기에

on the Gentiles 이방인들에게도, too 역시.

Peter’s 베드로의 friends 친구들은 from Joppa 욥바에서 온—all of them 그들 모두 Jewish 유대인이고,

all 모두 circumcised 할례 받은—were stunned 충격받았다 to see 보는 결과로 that절 내용을 즉 the gift 선물이

of the Holy Spirit 성령님의 was poured out 부어진 걸 even on outsiders 이방인들에게 조차도.

47 “Can anyone object /to their being baptized,

now that they have received the Holy Spirit /just as we did?”

After all 어쨌든, it’s 그것은 obvious 명백하다 (that)절 내용이 즉 they 그들이 have received 받았다는 것이

the Holy Spirit 성령님을 /just as 똑같이 we 우리가 did 받았던 on the Day of Pentecost 오순절 날에.

 

* 형역 부정사구 not to ceremonially wash these people through baptism as fellow disciples

* AFTER ALL ; in spite of considerations or expectations to the contrary : nevertheless.

48 So he gave [orders for them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ]. 

Afterward Cornelius asked him [to stay with them for several days].

* 당대의 사회 여건상 로마는 유대를 통치하는 정복자고 로마 장군은 신이라 자처하는 황제의 명령에 따라 살고 죽는 입장이고

  베드로는 그런 가이사의 명령에 정면으로 도전하여 예수님을 왕이라고 선언하는 입장이기에

  비록 한 자리에서 교제는 나누지만 현실적으로 인간의 노력만으로는 서로의 처지가 물과 기름 같이 융합될 수 없었기에

  그런 막막하고 답답한 현실을 극복할 수 있는 유일한 분이신 성령님의 임재하심이 그들의 찬송과 기쁨이 되었다

 

후일 로마군은 예루살렘 성전을 파괴하고 유대인 반란군을 몰살시켰지만

하나님께서는 이 백부장에게 그런 일에 끼이지 않도록 하셨을 것이 분명한 것은

성령님을 보내셔서 신자의 힘과 능력이 되시며 바른 생각과 길로 인도하셨을 것이 자명하기 때문이다
